Holiday Spiced Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups half and half
  • 2 cinnamon sticks, plus more for garnish
  • 1/2 vanilla pod
  • 1/4 tsp. fresh ground nutmeg
  • Scant pinch cayenne pepper
  • 4 oz. bittersweet chocolate, chopped or morsels
  • 4 oz. milk chocolate, chopped or morsels
  • 1 tbsp. granulated sugar
  • 2 oz. dark rum

Equipment:

  • Stainless steel saucepan
  • Measuring cups
  • Whisk
  • Coffee or tea mugs
  • Ladle strainer (optional)

Directions:

Bring milk, brown sugar and spices to a simmer in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then turn off heat and steep for 15 minutes. Bring back to a simmer, add chocolate and sugar, then whisk until smooth. Stir in rum off the heat if using. Divide hot chocolate among four mugs and garnish each with a cinnamon stick.
