Choose the right type of ceiling lighting for your needs:
- Pendants add task lighting above the kitchen island, the dining room table, and other areas. Arranged in multiples, pendant lights can add drama to a space.
- A chandelier provides ambient lighting and a focal point in the room. We offer chandeliers in styles running the gamut from candelabra to Sputnik.
- Use a flush or semi-flush mount fixture in an area where space is limited. A flush mount fixture installs directly against the ceiling; a semi-flush light fixture includes a short downrod that extends from the ceiling. Flush and semi-flush mount ceiling lights are streamlined yet decorative.
- Suspended from the ceiling, an island or linear light fixture illuminates a long, narrow area. This type of fixture adds ambient light suitable for commercial or residential spaces.
- Evoke a warm welcome inside the front door with foyer and entry lighting. A lantern, pendant, or hanging lamp in the foyer or entryway makes a dramatic first impression.
- Circulate the air and provide additional light with a ceiling fan. Select a lighted ceiling fan with a downrod mount on a high ceiling; a flush mount fan works best on a low ceiling.
- Set the mood in any room or illuminate your shower with a recessed ceiling light. We offer eyeball, long-neck, cone, and baffle recessed lights with or without coordinating trim.
- Highlight a specific feature in your home with track lighting: Use it to accent a piece of artwork, fireplace mantle, or stairwell.

Frequently Asked Questions
What type of ceiling light gives the most light?
Chandeliers, island lighting, linear fixtures, and other ceiling lights with multiple bulbs give off the most light in a room. Several recessed or can lights working together can also create an equivalent amount of ambient light. In general, the more bulbs in a fixture, the brighter it will glow—just take into consideration variables that mitigate the light, including lamp shades or a dimmer switch.
What are the different types of ceiling lights?
The different types of ceiling lights include pendants, chandeliers, linear lighting, semi-flush and flush-mount lights, recessed lights, and track lighting. Pendant lights, chandeliers, and linear lighting are often used to make a statement in a room’s décor, as well as provide ambient lighting, while recessed and track lighting are primarily functional. Semi-flush and flush-mount lights provide a more subtle accent to an interior space while offering additional ambient light.
How do I measure a ceiling light for my space?
To obtain the correct size for a chandelier, pendant, or semi-flush or flush-mount ceiling light, start with these simple formulas: First, measure the length and width of the room, in feet. Add those two numbers together, and then add "inches" at the end in place of feet—this number gives you the ideal diameter for your ceiling light. To determine the appropriate height in inches for a ceiling light, measure the distance between the ceiling and the floor in feet and multiply that number by 2.5 or 3.
For example, using these formulas, a room that measures 10 feet by 10 feet and has 9-foot ceilings calls for a ceiling light with a diameter of approximately 20 inches and a height between 22.5 and 27 inches.
You'll also want to consider traffic flow and where the fixture will hang: Unless you’re installing the light above a dining table, kitchen island, coffee table, or other furniture piece, allow at least 7 feet of clearance beneath it for unobstructed movement in the room.
